How Rolfing Creates Transformational Change
Rolfing achieves its dramatic and lasting results by releasing underlying fascial adhesions. Founded by biochemist Dr. Ida Rolf, her book explains it in the title: Reestablishing The Natural Alignment and Structural Integration of the Human Body for Vitality and Well-Being.
On a physical level, fascial adhesions restrict movement, maintain chronic tension, and impede the proper circulation of blood and lymph, which negatively impacts overall health. The release of these limitations has a profound effect on your overall vitality or life force-and your sense of well-being.
But perhaps even more significant, fascial misalignments and adhesions disrupt the body’s electrical flow, which travels not only through the nerves but also through the fascia itself. This interference diminishes our perception and sensitivity, disconnecting us from what some call the "energy body"—our deeper, spiritual connection to our physical self. This disconnect is often described as a lack of integration or grounding.
The layers of tension stored in our fascia are closely tied to our psychology. Our posture communicates a great deal about who we are and what we are experiencing emotionally. Over time, these tension patterns act as a kind of armor, shielding us from the harshness of the world but also cutting us off from the full sensation of being alive.
Dr. Ida Rolf developed the 10-Series Process as a systematic approach to release this armor, dramatically improving the function of the fascia and restoring harmony to the body’s structure. This process allows for a transformational shift—not just physically, but in our experience of being human.
The true goal of Rolfing, as Ida Rolf described it, is to align the body’s energy with the energy of gravity and the earth’s bioenergetics. This integration of physical and energetic systems results in a profound change in consciousness, enabling us to fully inhabit our bodies and reconnect with life in a deeper, more meaningful way.
The 10 Series Step by Step
Each session in the series has it's own independent goals which work towards fulfilling the larger overall goal of aligning the body properly with gravity.
Session 1: Expand The Breath
Systematically release the body's superficial fascia-the fascial sheath that lies just below the skin's surface and focusing on the surrounding fascia of the rib cage and diaphragm.
Session 2: Find Your Feet
The feet are the foundation of the entire vertical structure, having open, adaptable and responsive feet sets the stage for stacking the rest of the body on a solid foundation.
Session 3: Lengthen the sides
The body has the dimension of depth or thickness. This session is to open the width/depth of the body by releasing the front to back relationship down the sides of the body improving proprioception to utilize the full dimension of your body.
Session 4: The Inner Line
The beginning of the core sessions, the inner line of the legs into the pelvis begins connecting the line of gravity from the feet, through the legs into the stabilizing pelvis.
Session 5: Accessing the Core
Core strength has more to do with awakening the proprioceptive connection to the largely unconscious muscles deep in the abdomen and pelvis. Working up the front of the body we work the quadriceps and then deeply into the abdomen opening the psoas and illiacus, which are sources of hidden emotional tensions.
Session 6: Free the Sacrum
Here we release the deep 6 lateral rotators (glutes and hip muscles), the hamstrings and access the core from the back by working the key muscle in virtually all back pain- the Quadratus Lumborum. This profound session will transform your hips and low back.
Session 7: Putting the Head On
Now we work the thoracic outlet, releasing adhesions keeping the head out of alignment on the shoulders as well as accessing the top of the core through the jaw, throat, mouth and nose.
Session 8: Integrate the Upper Body
Deeply work to release the shoulder girdle through the axillary compartment (arm pits) on the subscapularis but also the rotator cuff and pecs to properly position the shoulder.
Session 9: Integrate the Lower Body
Now is our chance to revisit areas in the lower body which are not fully integrated yet or needed a bit more attention. You will feel the overall benefit of the series starting to really come to your awareness now.
Session 10: Structural Integration and Balancing the Horizontals
In our final session we work to integrate the entire body by looking at all the major horizontal planes in the body making sure they are level. We will work the low back and neck in this session too as I do in every single session of the series. We finish with a refreshed flexible body and a mind, whose grey matter may have been a bit fixed too, that is now far more flexible and open to new ideas, experiences and perspectives.
